Hello there mountaineers! As many of you may know, the Apparel Design and Merchandising major took a trip to New York City last week. We stayed in the Appalachian Loft and adventured around the city with a group of 17 students and two professors. We had such an amazing time learning about the industry and seeing the behind the scenes aspects of the fashion capital of the world. On Wednesday we arrived at the loft around 2 in the afternoon, unpacked, and headed out to take the subway to Times Square to have dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe.
(Students Jessica Hapney, Elizabeth Keeter, and Kelly Palmer riding the subway to Times Square.)
The next day we woke up bright and early to head out for our scheduled appointments around the city. First, we visited The Row, a line created by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. While there we were able to see their showroom and talk to two of their employees. The women expressed how important experience is and how even though the "grunt work" may be boring, it still benefits towards your future as a whole. Next we visited Century 21, a discount department store where we talked to one of the main Public Relations employees. After that we took a lunch break and then headed off to Soho to visit the home studio of designer of A Moi, a luxury women's line by Alejandra Alonso. We were able to look through some of her most recent designs and we were also informed that Lady Gaga recently wore one of her jackets, how cool is that?! Our final visit took place at RMC USA, a private label manufacturer who specializes in sweaters and knits and collaborates with stores like Anthropologie. After our appointments we headed home to change for the broadway show Wicked!

The next day, we headed off to visit the Fashion Institute of Technology where we listened to an extremely informative presentation on the history of apparel. Pictured above is an Oscar de la Renta dress from the early 70's. After the presentation we visited gift shop to snag some FIT gear, then made our way to Mood a store that specializes in designer fabrics and is famous for its appearance on the TV series Project Runway. After visiting Mood we had a quick lunch break then headed over to the Hunger Games Costume Exhibit!
Before we knew it, it was Saturday, our last day to soak up the magnificence of the city. We had a free day so many of the students went off on their own to shop and visit some of the famous sights of the "Big Apple". Below are some pictures of the students enjoying their free day in the city!
